Eddie Durham was born August 19, 1906 in San Marcos, TX. into a musically gifted family. Eddie and his siblings joined his father in playing for square dances and later formed The Durham Brothers Band. A composer, arranger, inventor and performer, best known on guitar and trombone, Eddie went on to gain national acclaim with the best big band jazz orchestras of his time including Benny Moten, Count Basie and the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band. A pioneer of the electric guitar, he is widely recognized for the first amplified guitar recording.

Eddie Durham’s legacy will be preserved in San Marcos with the creation of a museum for his archives as part of the revitalization of the historic Dunbar neighborhood and a project of the Calaboose African American History Museum.
