
The
San Marcos Area Arts Council
was formed in 1994 as an umbrella agency for artists
and arts organizations in the San Marcos Area.
Its mission
is to network, coordinate, encourage, support and promote
the arts, specifically through such programs as: Arts in
Public Places, Arts in the Community, and Arts in Education.
Among other things, the Arts Council currently:
- Curates
7 visual art displays annually at the Walkers' Gallery at the San
Marcos Activity Center;
- Sponsors and co-sponsors
community forums on the role of the arts in community
and in education, and informational meetings on grants and
other survival tools for artists;
- Partners with community organizations such as
The Calaboose African American History Museum, the Greater San
Marcos Youth Council, the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance,
Texas State University and others to support art and cultural events and arts education opportunities for children;
- Is partenering with the San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department and Texas State University Department of Art and Design to plan for public
sculpture park; and,
- Hosts an area-wide website for the arts, which includes a cultural calendar
The
San Marcos Area Arts Council encourages membership
from artists throughout the Hill Country and invites visual artists
from all over the world to participate in its popular local
exhibits.
